The former are always viewed as primarily symbols in a film which are good venues for studies. On the other hand, the latter are always seen as accessories to the protagonists. Thus, fewer studies are made about the antagonists. Films are good venues for establishing mythologies regarding such as femininity. Female actors occupy a huge role in establishing myths. The protagonists are usually seen as the Madonnas while antagonist are seen as the Whores. In line with this, the audience is unaware that antagonists also displayed attributes of a Madonna. The recognition of Madonna attributes in female antagonist shows the blurring of the fine line between the Madonna-Whore dichotomies. As the line differentiating the antagonist from the protagonist blur, women empowerment arises. This study presented the gray area regarding the "Madonna-Whore" concept through the images projected by female antagonist in selected Philippine films from 1950s to 2000s. This study showed that with the progression of Philippine cinema, the blurring of lines in the Madonna-Whore concept became evident. There is a fluctuation with the characterization of the bida and contrabida. With the existence of the gray area in the Madonna-Whore concept, it showed that the stereotyped notion of contrabidas was debunked, denoting women empowerment and admiration for the contrabidas as well -- Author's abstract.
