LA - English YR - 2007 UL - https://ds.mainlib.upd.edu.ph/Record/UP-99796217605174745 AB - This research studied the extent of use of developmentally appropriate practices in the selected preschools in Quezon City in their program for 5-year-old children. Purposive sampling was used in choosing the 30 samples for the study. Instruments were information sheet, and observation checklist and an interview guide. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used in data gathering and analysis. The quantitative part presented the demographic profile of the 30 teacher-respondents obtained through the information sheet, and the frequencies of developmentally appropriate practices in the 30 sample schools through the observation checklist. The 30 schools were grouped as having high, moderate, or low developmental appropriateness based on their average scores from the observation checklist. The qualitative part presented the factors that facilitated, as well as limited, the use of DAP, using interviews with one representative from each group. Sixteen schools were identified as having low developmental appropriateness, 13 with moderate developmental appropriateness, and only one school was found to have high developmental appropriateness. There were practices found to be frequently and seldom used by the sample schools. Schools gave more focus on the development of self-esteem and positive feelings toward learning on the physical development of the children. Teachers' knowledge of the typical characteristics of a 5-year-old children, recognition and acceptance of the individual differences among children, utilization of different teaching strategies, valuing and balancing of the developmental domains, integrated curriculum, educational background and experience with children were the factors found to facilitate the use of developmentally appropriate practices in the selected schools. Factors that limited the use of DAP, on the other hand, were high expectations from parents for more structure and more formal instruction, giving higher value to cognitive development over other developmental domains, conflicting personal and school's educational philosophy, budget constraints, and the extra effort invested by teachers on using DAP. The research recommends the use of DAP in all organizations, agencies, and groups that work with and for the children. Suggestions for further research were likewise recommended.
